South America Travel Tips -

From The Motorcycle Diaries to Wild Carnivals!

South America travel tips range far and wide on this widely unpopulated continent. In fact, as these things go, South America is only more populus than Antartica (duh) and Australia (where most of the population is centered around it's coastline.) Despite the large land mass and lower population density, South Americans are welcoming, friendly people with vivid traditions and cultures that are sure to please any cultural traveler.

Some Background on South America

This continent is home to 12 countries and 3 dependencies. It's population has roots in the ancient civilizations whose trade, cultures, influence, technology and architecture rivaled and was contemporary with those that build the Egyptian pyramids.

Unfortunately, the plagues that swept the land from the European colonization forces. That, combined with forced labor practices in the colonies of Spain and Portugal as well as the forced conversions to Christianity, decimated the population and many of the native cultures.

After winning independence in the 1800s, the 20th century saw the continent become the battlefield of the Cold War. Not a little bit as a result of this and other abuses of the region by larger countries, in recent times Internation Indebitedness has become a huge problem for the region, with trickle-down oppressive poverty and crime as a result.

The Union of South American Nations and growing tourism and trade continue to work to alleviate these economic problems, but travelers should make sure to read about safety precautions in the countries and dependencies they travel to. For those looking for a more hands-on approach, there are many opportunities for volunteerism in South America.

South America Travel Tips by Country

Each country on this continent is unique, with it's own culture, climate, history and sights. Therefore, I try to identify a country to correspond to every travel tip each time someone submits one - allowing you to find the tips that best suit your travel destination.

Susan's Note: Listing or not listing of particular states here is dependent on the time I have for development, the travel tips that have been submitted and the demand of my visitors and is not intended as a political statement in any way. I'm also currently working on a visual click-map for all my main pages, which should be up by the end of summer.
